SARAH ANN TAYLOR, daughter of William Taylor and Mary Cochran, was born on 17 Sep 1821 in Posey Township, Switzerland County, Indiana. She died on 17 January 1895 in Posey Township, Switzerland County, Indiana, She was interred at the Patriot Cemetery, Posey Township, Switzerland County, Indiana. Sarah married on 16 October 1845 in Switzerland County, Indiana to JAMES LONG, born 28 February 1816 in Kentucky. He died on 24 November 1899 in Rising Sun, Indiana and is assumed to be buried next to his wife, Sarah, at the Patriot Cemetery. There is an entry for him there on a tombstone, however the date of death was never filled in. This James Long is NOT the same person as the James M. Long who married Sarah's sister, Nancy, although it is assumed they are related in some way. As of this writing that relationship isn't known.

That Sarah was a daughter of William Taylor and Mary Cochran was a theory I'd had for a long time but a definitive source to prove it eluded me for over 20 years. Then, after writing a query to the Switzerland County Historical Society, that confirmation was at last found among some of their recently acquired materials. A kind researcher took a look for me and loose in one of the boxes of old records and papers that were in the process of being catalogued, was a scrap of paper with a hand-written note by William Taylor. The note was giving consent by William and his wife, Mary, for their daughter, Sarah Ann Taylor, to marry James Long! And the date of the consent was consistant with the date of the marriage record on file. It is stunning to me that this little slip of paper survived through numerous moves of the records and materials around Switzerland County for over 170 years. I believe the miracle of it's survival in the holdings of the Switzerland County Historical Society is likely the only source for verifying the parents of Sarah A. Taylor. I have a digital photograph of that note and find great satisfaction in recalling its story every time I look at it. And it's a reminder of the advice often given to persistant genealogists, "Only a mere fraction of the records and genealogical material out there is online".
