NEHEMIAH KNAPP & REBECCA TREADWELL
![]()
NEHEMIAH KNAPP (Son of John Knapp and Hannah Jennings) was born 9 November 1740 in Connecticut. He died after 1795. He married about 1773 in Fairfield County, Connecticut to REBECCA TREADWELL, born abt. 1747 in Stratfeild, Fairfield County, Connecticut.
Note: Sources vary in regard to when Nehemiah died. Some say it was before 14 November 1786 in Argyle, Washington County. I agree with the research of Fritz Knapp which only states that Nehemiah died after 1795 and that he was known to have lived at one time in Argyle, Washington County, New York. In support of that we have the research of Howard Victor Taylor which shows that "The Families of Old Fairfield" lists a 1795 deed record indicating the seller (Nehemiah Knapp) sells to Ebenezer Knap eleven acres in Fairfield. Mr. Taylor also points to the record of "Rebakah Knap", likely Nehemiah’s widow, in the 1800 census for Danbury, Fairfield, CT with one male aged 26 to 44, likely one of her sons. Given this information it seems safe to say that Nehemiah died between 1796 and 1800.
I have been aware that there is a Nehemiah Knapp listed near Ann Knapp Morehouse and Thomas Knapp in the 1800 census for Norfolk, Litchfield County, Connecticut. This same Ann Knapp was the sister of Nehemiah Knapp who married Rebecca Treadwell. At one time I thought this Nehemiah living near her in Norfolk in 1800 was possibly her brother. I guess it still could be if he died after the enumeration was done in Norfolk and then following his death his widow moved to Danbury and was included in a later enumeration there. But there is also the possibility that the Nehemiah listed near Ann Knapp Morehouse was another relative. More research needed here. (W.R. Knapp )
John Knapp and Rebecca Treadwell had the following known children:
1. RUTH KNAPP, born abt. 1774 in Connecticut, married John Taylor.
2. NATHANIEL KNAPP
3. MICHAEL KNAPP
4. JAMES KNAPP
